Colouring and Tangling Workshops for Adults

The popularity of colouring and zentangle art for adults is growing and the benefits of these enjoyable and creative activities can be great for reducing stress and anxiety or just a reason to find some “me” time in your busy life. The best thing of all is that they can easily be done by anyone without requiring any art ability whatsoever.

Many parents who drop off their young creatives to my art studio tell me that their lives are frantic and the fast pace of juggling work with family life can be stressful and overwhelming.

I am thrilled to now be offering workshops for adults….

“Zentangles are drawings composed of patterns (tangles) that can be viewed from all four sides. Zentangles do not contain recognizable objects and there is no “right side up”. The Zentangle method is very focused and mindful.”

NOTE: I am not a certified zentangle teacher and the workshops are not about learning how to do the true zentangles and patterns but about creating zentangle-inspired artworks using existing or user created patterns.

  • learn all about zentangles, patterns and creating zentangle-inspired artworks
  • use free resources and templates created by me, Lesley Smitheringale
  • how to use stencils to easily create zentangle-inspired artworks
  • tips, techniques & demonstrations on using black pens, white gel pens, lead pencils to add shading for a 3-D effect
  • how to add colour to your zentangles
  • advice about the best pens to purchase
  • projects where we tangle different items such as plaster animal heads, white canvas shoes, coasters, pebble paper weights, teracotta flower pots, paper-mache boxes and lots more….
  • Purchase zentangle-inspired books designed and made by me, Lesley Smitheringale
  • Brewed coffee, tea, fresh orange juice or filtered water and danish pastries provided
  • Come for 1 workshop or pre-book and pay for as many as you want to secure your place.

  • The best black pens you can afford such as micron pens. Officeworks sells sets of pens and ones I have tried and like are Artline Drawing System  – pigment ink, waterbased and water resistant in a set of 6 from 0.1 to 0.8 or Unipin water and fade proof, pigment ink fine line pens. If you can’t afford a set, a thin and thick sharpie pen will do but these fade to a brown colour over time. A great alternative and slightly more expensive is to buy individual black Faber Castell Pitt Artist Pens, also from Officeworks.
  • White pigment ink pen such as the Uni-ball brand from Officeworks
  • a laptop, tablet or IPad where you can access the internet using wifi in the studio to look at zentangle patterns to use in your designs (this is optional). Some patterns will already be provided for you to use.
  • An A4 visual diary or good quality sketch pad

I do have paper, colour pencils|watercolour pencils, watercolour paints, thick and thin black sharpies, chalk pastels, erasers, lead pencils and rulers in the studio but I would encourage you to bring your own pens and materials to use to tangle.

  • Individual workshops run for 2 hours and cost is $37. This includes tea, brewed coffee, fresh orange juice, filtered water and danish pastries. [or bring your own snack if you are on a special diet]
  • As workshop sizes are small (up to 8 adults), you are required to book and pay in advance please using the booking form link below.
  • No refunds will be given unless a class is cancelled due to lack of numbers where you will receive a complete refund. If the class is definitely going ahead and you decide not to attend you will be able to book an alternative session(s) or find someone to take your place if you contact me, Lesley in advance to let me know you can’t make it. Thank you for your understanding.
  • After you fill out the booking form you will be sent an e-mail with an invoice for payment (due before the workshop commences).
  • You may book a single workshop or as many as you wish to secure your place.
  • If you cannot make it to a workshop please notify me, Lesley as early as possible.
  • If I, Lesley, have to cancel a class which you have paid for, you will be entitled to a make-up workshop.
