Hi, my name is Lesley Smitheringale and I run the art classes at Engaged in Art. I will be your child’s teacher.
I was a fully registered teacher until I retired from teaching in High Schools. I’m now the holder of a Blue Card.
As well as teaching Middle and High School students I also have two years experience working in an OSHC [Outside School Hours Care] Centre where I ran art and craft activities for children from Prep to Year 6].
I’m originally from Scotland and like all artists, I’ve been obsessed with colour, paint, pencils, pens and the magic they create, since a very small child.
This passion for the visual arts resulted in me being accepted into Glasgow School of Art and there were lots of tears of joy the day I opened THAT letter. After specialising in Printed Textiles and gaining a B.A. Honours Degree in Design I decided I wanted to be an art teacher and help young creatives along their art journey. One more year of study at Jordanhill College of Education in Scotland enabled me to become an art teacher at High School level.
After teaching art for 10 happy years in a High School in Cumbernauld, I felt like a sea change and did a teacher exchange where I swapped houses and jobs with an Australian teacher for a Year. That year changed my life and resulted in me falling in love with the Country and calling Australia home.
Now happily married to my Aussie husband Peter, for just over 20 years with our three cats who adopted us and decided they wanted to move in. Long story which you’ll hear all about when I meet you in my little studio. Oh and you’ll get to meet Sam, Phantom and Ninx, our feline friends too.
My Artistic Endeavours
As well as teaching extra-curricular art to children I do my own fine art and make and sell products in my online shops. Here are some works from my portfolio and places you can find me online.
Colouring and Tangling: I design and sell adult colouring books and love to do zentangle-inspired art
Engaged in Art: I create art and craft resources for children, adults and teachers.
